Connecting to the BIPL-SNAPPER file server

Bipl offers users of the lab access to its file server for ease of use transferring data back and forth between labs. You can connect the file server using the File Transfer Protocol (ftp). The server does not currently support either the Secure Copy (scp) or the Secure File Transfer (sftp) protocols. You will work with three folders on the server: Archive, Storage, or Posters.

  • Archive is a repository of past months storage folders. Normally, we will keep three or four months of data before deletion, but if there is a need for more space we will delete more to make room. Archive provides read only access.
  • Storage represents all data being stored in the current month. At or near the beginning of each month a new storage folder is created and the old one is moved to Archive. Storage provides both read and write access.
  • Posters is only used for those users who are submitting posters files for the BIPL staff to process.

Accessing the server

  • address / url: ftp://bipl-snapper.bsbe.umn.edu
  • username: bipl
  • password: biplsnap

Connecting with Apple Macintosh (Mac OS X): OS X will allow you to directly connect to a FTP server.

  1. Make sure that the Finder is the application in the foreground. Once that is done, choose Go from the menu bar. From there, choose Connect to Server... A Connect to Server menu should now appear.
  2. Enter the URL for the file server and choose Connect. (note: you may have better luck using afp:// as opposed to ftp://)
  3. Next you should be challenged to authenticate yourself with a name and password. Choose the Registered User option, followed by the username and password. Again choose Connect.
  4. You will now be presented with which volume (folder) to mount. Choose either archive or storage depending on your need.
  5. You should now see an icon on your desktop for the connection. You can interact with it as if it was any other kind of storage medium.
  6. To disconnect from the server, simply drag the server icon to the trash.

Connecting with Apple Macintosh (Mac OS 8.x – 9.x): If you use an older version of the Mac OS or would like an alternative method of connecting to the file server, we recommend checking out the FTP clients that ADCS has listed here.

Connecting with Microsoft Windows (2000 / XP): Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP both come with the ability to directly connect to a FTP server and view that server as a folder, to which you can drop and drop items to and from.

  1. Open up the Windows File Manager. Under the Tools menu choose Map Network Drive...
  2. Choose the Web folder or FTP site or Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server option.
  3. Under Windows XP you now get the Add Network Place Wizard. Choose to specify the address of a Web site, network location, or FTP site.
  4. Enter the file server's url ftp://bipl-snapper.bsbe.umn.edu
  5. Turn OFF Log on anonymously and enter bipl for a user name.
  6. You should now be able to connect to the file server. You may be challenged to enter a password. If so enter biplsnap.

Connecting with Microsoft Windows (9x / NT): If you use Windows 9x, NT, or would like an alternative method of connecting to the file server, we recommend Filezilla. Filezilla is a freely available ftp client that will run under Windows.  NOTE:  When connecting with Filezilla make sure that the client is running in active mode.
